The Greeting Card Association has come up with some interesting figures regarding Valentine’s Day.

According to the their website and a 2004 poll (called The Emotional State of the Union survey), Americans send or give 7 billion cards a year, with Valentine’s Day being the second most popular card-sending holiday. (Christmas is the most popular.)

Worldwide, some one billion valentines are sent annually. Not surprisingly, women are the engine behind this buying trend, and the association estimates they buy the majority (85%) of all valentines.

The so-called Hallmark Holiday, Valentine’s Day has been in existence as a recognized holiday since the Middle Ages. Although culturally adjusted, it also exists as an international Day of Love - even to the point that in Korea, boys and men who don’t get anything for Valentine’s Day group together (to commiserate and eat) on a day called Black Day.

Layer meaning upon meaning this Valentine’s Day, when you give your girl a heart-shaped amethyst cubic zirconium ring. The purple amethyst has been associated with royalty and imbued with mystical powers of protection since Ancient Egypt.

If your child is an Aquarius and happened to born on February 14th - and most particularly if the day of birth was a Friday - then this birthstone is a perfect gift, whether it be in the form of a ring, earring, bracelet or pendant.

As an added touch, why not order a personalized ceramic mini-heart holder? Just the right size to keep her new piece of jewelry safe, the heart shape is another visual reminder of your love for her.

A couple of chocolate kisses inside would make your little Valentine’s Day girl even sweeter than she already is!

With February 14th looming once again, the color of gemstone jewelry speaks volumes to the little girl nearest to your heart.

From the rosy red of garnets, the color of hearts and love, to the delicate white of fresh water pearl, the color of innocence and purity, earrings, rings and bracelets have always been a favorite gift on Valentine’s Day.

Children are introduced to this annual celebration of love by their parents, and as they get older, they reach out with best wishes to relatives and friends. By the time they hit pre-school, those little hands are busy cutting out heart shapes with safety scissors. Can you ever forget getting your first batch of 25 or so Valentine Day cards from your kindergarten classmates and the teacher too?

It may have become commercialized, but fundamentally, any day that celebrates the love of family and friends makes this world of ours a better place to live.

There’s been a rather astounding development in the world of January birthstone gems with the discovery of “the largest clean tsavorite in the world.”

First a quick review for the uninitiated. January’s birthstone, the garnet, is made of up minerals. Depending on its mineral impurity content, a garnet can be any shade of red or it can be black or even a transparent green. The green garnet is called a tsavorite and according to Wikipedia, the “Tsavorite can be considered a ‘new’ gemstone since it was unknown before its discovery in Kenya in the 1960s.”

So anyway, an article in the National Jeweler Network.com says that the $2.2million rock weighs an incredible 325.13 carats. Found in Tanzania, it’ll be on display in Tucson, Arizona, at the American Gem Trade Association Gem Fair. If you’re in the area at the end of January, why not ogle to your heart’s content?

And if you’re slightly depressed that you can’t afford to buy a rock like this green garnet, don’t worry. You’re in good hands with Abigail’s Place, where our gemstones are high quality, gorgeously set and always affordable.

Ask yourself two seemingly unrelated questions:

What’s your favorite color?
When were you born?

Many people are often surprised by the fact that their favorite color is also the color of their birthstone.

For example, if your month of birth is January, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear you say that red is at the top of your favorite color list. The most common color of the January birthstone garnet is red, although the gemstone itself actually does come in a rainbow of shades with the exception of blue.

Do you know the colors of the months, according to birth stones?

1. Purple (or violet) is February’s color (the birth stone is the amethyst)
2. Light Blue (or blue green) is March’s color (the birth stone is the aquamarine)
3. White is April’s color (the birth stone is the diamond)
4. Green is May’s color (the birth stone is the emerald)
5. White or red are June’s colors (the birth stone is the pearl or alexandrite)
6. Red is July’s color (the birth stone is the ruby)
7. Olive Green is August’s color (the birth stone is the peridot)
8. Blue (and sometimes pink) are September’s colors (the birth stone is the sapphire)
9. White or Black (or shades of pink) are October’s colors (the birth stone is the opal)
10. Yellow is November’s color (the birth stone is the yellow topaz or citrine)
11. Blue is December’s color (the birth stone is the blue topaz)

There’ll be a quiz tomorrow!

Bright colors are favored by young children in everything from their own paintings and drawings to the clothes they wear. Primary colors (yellow, red, and blue) are the first chosen by kids when they’re starting to color pictures, with older children and teenagers branching out to include a broader spectrum of colors.

Earrings, bracelets and rings are no different. Whether you’re looking for a specific birthstone or simply a pretty piece of jewelry (like these brilliant 14 kt gold enameled sunflower earrings), the actual age of the child you’re buying for can help direct your color section.

If you’ve got a slightly older and very fashion-conscious young lady in the house, look at next season’s line up of clothes to get an idea of the colors you can mix and match with for her jewelry. Some pieces, like gold earrings or pearl bracelets, of course, will go with whatever she wears. But a flash of just the right color pendant can sure make a great outfit even better.

Learning the value of money is a necessary lesson all children must learn - and one that will help them throughout life.

Of course, buying gifts for our children, whether those gifts are jewelry, toys or ornaments, is certainly one of the many joys of being a parent. Who doesn’t love to watch a young face brighten with pleasure at the sight of a wonderful present?

But there are times when, no matter how beautiful the object of desire, we tell the child to wait - for a birthday or some other special gift-giving day. That’s when the all-important life lesson comes into play, because your son or daughter always has the option of saving up for the coveted piece and buying it for him or herself.

In the Victorian Language of Flowers, a red rose symbolized true love. Perhaps that’s why the garnet, a deep red gemstone, stands for eternal friendship and unbreakable trust.

Of course, most of us buy gems more for what they look like than for any hidden meaning they might hold - but it’s nice to know that this January birthstone has such a lovely underlying significance.

January-birthstone-necklace.jpg

If you’re looking for a garnet in a different color, like green or black (or even clear), they are available although rarer than red. Even though the color connection between red and love may not remain the same, a garnet is a garnet, and remains not only January’s birthstone but also the Tuesday birthday stone.

Birthstones are much more than simply pretty rocks chosen to represent any month of the year.

Crystals, gems and minerals dredged from the earth have held meanings through the ages, and that’s certainly true of the garnet (known to be a popular gem in Ancient Egypt). A warm and lively stone for the very cold month of January, its most common color is a deep shade of sparkling red.

It’s interesting to see, for instance, how the garnet is connected with energy spirals, or chakras, in our bodies. These chakras are believed to transmit life forces. Energy practitioners generally agree that the garnet is an important gem used to clean and balance chakras, which lead to power and wealth.

When you buy garnet, it seems you’re getting a lot more than just a lovely January birthstone.
